Common Questions
API RP 574 Inspection of Piping Tubing Valves Fittings โ Frequently Asked Questions
Authoritative answers about API RP 574 Inspection of Piping Tubing Valves Fittings, inspection intervals, qualifications, RBI, and ISO Xpert consulting.
What is API RP 574?
API RP 574 is the American Petroleum Institute Recommended Practice for Inspection of Piping, Tubing, Valves, and Fittings. It is the companion inspection guidance document to API 570 (Piping Inspection Code), providing practical guidance on how to inspect piping systems, including pipe circuit classification, inspection methods for different piping components, NDE techniques, and specific guidance for high-risk areas such as injection points, deadlegs, and soil-to-air interfaces.
What are injection points and why are they critical in API RP 574?
Injection points are locations where chemicals, corrosion inhibitors, water, steam, or other substances are injected into a process stream. They are particularly susceptible to localised corrosion because the injected chemical may not be uniformly mixed with the process stream at the injection location, leading to high local concentrations, velocity effects, and phase changes. API RP 574 and API 570 require injection points to receive increased inspection frequency with thickness measurements extending both upstream and downstream of the injection nozzle.
What are deadlegs in piping and how should they be inspected?
Deadlegs are sections of piping that are out of service or have little or no flow. They can accumulate water, solids, or process condensate that concentrates corrosive species. In water-containing services, deadlegs can corrode from the inside even when the main active piping is protected by inhibitor flow. API RP 574 requires deadlegs to be identified in the inspection programme, with thickness measurements at the low-point and in areas where liquid accumulates or stagnation occurs.
How does CUI affect piping inspection per API RP 574?
Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) is one of the most significant inspection challenges in process plant piping. Water ingress into the insulation โ especially in temperature ranges favourable to corrosion (carbon steel: 10ยฐC to 175ยฐC) โ can cause severe localised external corrosion of the pipe wall that is hidden under the insulation. API RP 574 requires a CUI inspection programme for all insulated piping, using methods such as pulsed eddy current (PEC), profile radiography, insulation removal with UT, or thermal inspection.
